Requirements for a Working Holiday Visa

  • Working Holiday Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years of age. Application before the 18th birthday is possible, although usage of the visa before the 18th birthday is not allowed. A Working Holiday stay after the 31st birthday is possible as long as the visa has been issued before that day.
  • Application for a Working Holiday Visa in Austria is possible from three months before and – as possible – not later than three weeks before usage of the visa.
  • The visa must be used within its validity. The working relationship must end with the expiration of the visa the latest.
  • The validity period of the Working Holiday Visa for Austria can’t be changed after issuance.
  • The Working Holiday stay can’t be longer than twelve months (from the first day of entry).
  • Primary occasion and reason for travelling are not employment or education.
  • Applicants need to have a passport which is valid at least three months after the planned return to the country of origin.
  • Applicants need to provide a return ticket or sufficient funds for the purchase of such a ticket.
  • Applicants need to provide sufficient funds for the initial time of their stay in Austria in order to prove appropriate subsistence.
  • Applicants need to provide sufficient health insurance.
  • Applicants need to fulfill possible health and repute requirements and must not be convicted of a crime

Documents to be submitted

  • Application form for a National Visa (visa D), duly filled out and signed
  • 1 passport photograph according to ICAO-Guidelines (please do not fix the picture to the application form)
  • Valid Canadian passport (valid until at least three months after the last day of validity of the applied visa, at least two free visa pages)
  • Police clearance check
  • Sufficient travel, health and accident insurance with a minimum coverage of 30,000 EUR for each medical expense, and repatriation) and validity in the entire Schengen area, including the following details: name of insured person, length of coverage, insurance sum
  • Proof of sufficient funds: applicants must show proof of sufficient funds to help cover initial expenses in Austria
  • Proof of means of transportation to and from Austria or sufficient funds for purchasing a respective ticket
  • Consular fee: approximately EURO 150.00 payable in cash only
